I've been a professional photographer for more than 25 years, first in the press and then freelance since 2006. I now work providing commercial and business photography to a diverse portfolio of clients ranging from some of the largest commercial, business and engineering organisations in the world to niche publishers, artists and theatrical companies. Whether i’m doing headshot photography, managing full scale commercial shoots, producing lifestyle images, chasing trains around the countryside or laying a gas pipeline in the pouring rain I approach every session with commitment, professionalism, creativity and patience. I’m good at what I do, I enjoy it and when you work with me you’ll appreciate the dedication and care that I bring to your project.
I've been lucky enough to build some great relationships with my clients (and my crews) over the years, as a consequence I have worked with many of them for a long time now on a whole range of different projects and experiences. I also work closely with the international photography company Gittings Global, not only delivering their iconic business portrait photography but also supporting and coaching their teams of photographers around the world.
I’m based in Guildford in the south of England, spend most of my time in London but work nationwide and travel wherever the project takes me. My work has appeared all over the world and in every medium possible, i’m even a contributor to the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, here are a few examples of my photography in situ…
As a commercial photographer I work pretty much everywhere, your office, construction site, field, warehouse, nuclear bunker, frequently on location and always to tight schedules. I’m comfortable managing full scale, location based commercial shoots, spending the day in the studio, or wandering around with a subject to find the perfect spot for a portrait. I’m well versed at setting up a temporary a studio wherever the shoot needs to happen (in the boardroom mostly) and can do it surprisingly quickly if the situation arises. I can probably set up a headshot session in minutes!
I like to keep things pretty varied (I love a new experience) I love working to briefs and encourage close collaborations wherever possible.
So… People! As you can tell i’m a people photographer, the subject and their story is central to all of my photography. My work is largely narrative driven and I work person first, then the story then the practicalities of the shoot. This helps me to develop the warmth and purpose present in my images, takes away that feeling of artifice and brings the subject and viewer closer together. My aim is to fully understand what you are trying to communicate and how you will be using your photography, once we are all coming from the same place we’ll be perfectly set to make some amazing pictures together and create the maximum amount of impact with every image we deliver.
Here's a behind the scenes film of me in action on a commercial lifestyle shoot…..
A huge amount of my work is actually done with ‘Real’ people (like me and you) who are in their own environments and going about their usual lives. Meeting nervous strangers is a big part of the job so I’m pretty good at putting everyone at ease and very quick with friendly bonding.
Although I understand a deadline I’m a mostly unstressed and informal person, that goes a long way towards creating a fun, relaxed set and making everyone feel comfortable together. I find that calm interaction, clear instructions and gentle encouragement works with pretty much everyone, subjects, clients and crew alike.
If there is anything that you think I can help you with please get in touch, I would be more than happy to chat through whatever you need, I do a good line in brain storming and i’m not at all pushy.
Here's some gentle on set fun from collaboration I did with the performance artist Jos Houben and the team at Original Editions...
Other less important things to know are that I live just outside London in Guildford, Surrey with my wife and children, I enjoy the less serious prime time detective shows (Columbo etc) and as a result of this advertisers on both ITV and Channel 5 think that i’m in my late 60’s (i’m not). My favourite bar is the Butterfly and the Pig in Glasgow (this is always open to review), i’m an absolute sucker for a canal or river and (for unknown reasons) I really love a good bridge. I also love accents, I can’t do them but will bang on about how amazing yours’ is for the entire shoot if you let me.

Thanks to Philip Hartley for the lovely enthusiastic portrait and for setting me off on this path all those years ago, the Camera Favicon was created by Gregor Cresnar from the Noun Project.
If you’re still here (wow) and fancy a giggle, here is a film of me (in 2011!) shooting the self portrait above, look out for the falling camera. I’ve had a haircut since then of course and a complete change of dress sense…
…and I’ve stopped pulling that stunt after breaking my hip doing something similar and equally stupid, I’m sure there was a reason for doing it but I can’t remember what that was anymore.
Finally if you’re really, really bored you can tap here for some links to the equipment and suppliers that I like to use and would sort of endorse (if they asked me to).
Thanks for looking, remember to smile if someone points a camera at you, see you soon.
